A number of attitudes and misconceptions are barriers to the prevention of problem gambling among youth. For one, society does not recognize youth gambling as a problem. The majority of youth gamble for the enjoyment and to win money (Dervensky & Gupta, 2001), and many people, especially youth, do not see gambling as a high-risk activity. Gambling is a common recreation or entertainment, and individuals who don’t gamble are in the minority. In fact, a youth’s family may remain passive about, or even promote, gambling. For another, gambling, unlike drug and alcohol use, is not considered a youth issue, and the lack of knowledge about risk factors encourages complacency.
