Helping Professionals

Resources That Will Help You Develop Cultural Competency

by Vicente Gannam

Resources that address the issue of gambling and ethno-cultural communities are rare. With exception of the four studies below, the resources I provide focus on cross-cultural counselling and cultural competence. They will assist counsellors working with problem gamblers to become more sensitive to cross-cultural issues. Unfortunately, the majority of these resources are not in Canada. I have experienced difficulty in locating and accessing resources in Canada, but the very few I have found are listed below. I am not able to provide a complete resource list. However, I have provided some places where professionals can start searching and networking in order to build a database that will eventually lead them to the information they are seeking. I have not included a section for books since there is a reference list at the end of the chapter.
