Signs and indicators of problem gambling are similar among women and men. The following are common signs and indicators of problem gambling, divided in different categories: financial, emotional, behavioural, time and health. While some individuals may exhibit some of these signs, this does not necessarily mean that they are experiencing problems related to gambling. Usually, when someone is having difficulty with gambling, they exhibit a large number of these signs. What we see is an overall pattern of problems.
1. Financial Signs and Indicators:
- Money missing from a bank account or wallet
- Valuables or money mysteriously disappear
- Holding a second job but has no change in finances
- Changes in spending priorities and habits
- Frequently borrowing money from family, friends or coworkers
- Cashing in savings account, RRSP's or insurance plans
- Alternating between being broke and having extra money
2. Emotional Signs and Indicators:
- Withdrawing from family and friends
- Seems anxious or has difficulty paying attention
- Has mood swings or sudden outbursts of anger
- Seems depressed or suicidal
3. Behavioural Signs and Indicators:
- Stops doing things she previously enjoyed
- Misses family events
- Changes with respect to intimacy with others
- Ignores self-care, work, school or family tasks
- Has conflicts over money with other people
- Leaves children alone, seems less concerned about who looks after them, children not fed or clothed adequately, neglects their basic care
- Neglects personal responsibilities
4. Time Signs and Indicators:
- Large blocks of time unaccounted for
- Frequently late for work or other commitments
5. Health Signs and Indicators:
- Frequent headaches
- Frequent stomach and bowel problems
- Difficulty sleeping
- Overeating, or loss of appetite
