Dr. Rush is a Senior Scientist with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and is currently the Associate Director of the Health Systems Research and Consulting Unit within the Centre and an Associate Professor in the Depts. of  Psychiatry and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.  He holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and has worked for over 25 years in a research and evaluation capacity in the substance abuse and mental health fields. His career has involved a rewarding balance of scientific work and program and policy development.  His research interests have included: the longitudinal study of the addiction treatment system in Ontario; performance measurement systems for substance abuse, problem gambling and mental health services; prevalence and impact of concurrent substance and mental disorders; and implementation analysis of community mental health support services. Gambling related research has included an assessment of trends over time among those seeking treatment for problem gambling in Ontario as well as geographic mapping of the relationship between the prevalence of problem gambling in the community, the availability of help and treatment service utilization.  Prevalence of comorbidity across problem gambling, substance abuse and mental disorders has also been studied with national population survey data.  His research findings have been applied many times to needs-based planning and policy analysis for alcohol and drug treatment services in Ontario and internationally.
