Ontario Problem Gambling Community Allies


cGrowth the Committee on Gambling Resources for Ontario Women to Reduce Harm

A Committee of over 10 health care professionals dedicated to communicating system level and program level strategies for the ongoing enhancement of problem gambling services for women. Their goal is to inform best practices, enhance access, remove barriers and increase the likelihood of a positive outcome for women with gambling related issues.  The Committee has also developed resources for both public and professional groups.

Costi Immigrant Services

COSTI Immigrant Services is a community-based multicultural agency providing employment, educational, settlement and social services to all immigrant communities, new Canadians and individuals in need of assistance. Their Problem Gambling Program includes a counselling and awareness program for the Italian, Portuguese and Spanish speaking community.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Information System (DATIS)

DATIS contributes to the understanding and enhancement of Ontario’s problem gambling and addiction treatment system through the development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive, province-wide client information system. Developed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Mental Health and Addictions Program, DATIS collects and reports client demographic and service utilization data from addiction and problem gambling treatment services in Ontario.

Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline

An information and referral service available to members of the public including those affected by problem gambling, their family/friends and service providers working with clients experiencing problems related to gambling. This service links callers with problem gambling treatment resources and provides a 1-888 province wide toll-free service. Their web site includes a database of Ontario treatment organizations.

Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre (OPGRC)

The OPGRC is a funding agency that invests in problem gambling research. The OPGRC continues to increase the capacity in Ontario to conduct research and disseminate findings through, for example, their comprehensive website. Their mandate includes funding/investing in research, building research capacity and knowledge translation.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG)

As a Crown agency, OLGC reports to the Government of Ontario's Ministry of Public Infrastructure Renewal (PIR) and is responsible for the province's lotteries, charity and aboriginal casinos, commercial casinos and slots-at-racetracks program. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is responsible for break-open tickets and bingo, and regulates casino gaming in Ontario. The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) is responsible for horse racing in the province. Both the AGCO and ORC report to the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services.

Ontario Resource Group on Problem Gambling and Older Adults 55+

The Ontario resource group is composed of representation from 9 sites in Ontario. These groups develop and share clinical resources, participate in current research initiatives and provide data related to problem gambling behaviour among older adults. Their goals include, developing resources articulate program and system level strategies to enhance problem gambling services for older adults, and develop guidelines, recommendations and standards for services provided for older adults that will support best practices, enhance access and remove barriers.

Responsible Gambling Council (RGC)

The RGC is a non-profit organization that works with individuals and communities to address gambling in a healthy and responsible way. The Council undertakes research and public awareness programs designed to prevent gambling related problems. The Council provides leadership in the field of problem gambling prevention by: providing information and resources; developing innovative, effective awareness programs; and conducting leading-edge research that promotes and educates the public about responsible gambling.

The Y Youth Gambling Program

The program addresses the needs of youth ages 8-12 and people who influence and work with youth living in the province of Ontario. The goal is to reduce the potential harm associated with youth gambling. They offer a wide range of services including, community awareness sessions, presentations to schools and organizations that work with youth, educational workshops for parents, teachers, health care professionals and other agencies working with youth. There are 18 sites across Ontario serving over 100 communities.
