Glossary of Roulette Terms

American Wheel

A roulette wheel with thirty-eight numbers, including 0, 00 and 1-36.

Ball

A small plastic ball that spins in the opposite direction of the wheels turn. The ball establishes the payoffs for each spin as it lands in a number pocket.

Carr

A French term for a corner bet.

Colonne

A French term for column bet.

Column Bet

A roulette table is divided into three columns. Wagers on a combination of twelve numbers simultaneously pay 2 to 1.

Combination Bet

Using chips in the same position to bet on several numbers at the same time.

Corner Bet

A inside bet on four numbers simultaneously that pays a return of 8 to 1.

Croupier

Refers to a casino employee that operates roulette tables.

D'Alenbert System

Also known as Alenbert system. Bets are raised one unit after each losing bet and lowered one unit after each winning bet, ensuring that winning bets are always higher than your losing bets.

Dealer Signature

A dealer's predictable spin that gives the player a wager advantage. Since you can continue to bet after the spin begins, some say they are able to cover those numbers and increase their chances of winning.

Dozen Bet

A bet on twelve numbers concurrently, on either 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.

Even‑Odd Bet

An outside bet on eighteen numbers that pays 1 to 1 if the winning number is odd or even.  

Five Number Bet

A wager on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 simultaneously and gives the casino a 7.89% edge over the player.

French Wheel

Also known as European Wheel. A roulette wheel with only one zero usually found in European casinos.

High‑Low Bet

A wager on eighteen numbers at the same time (either 1-18 or 19-36) that pays 1 to 1.

Inside Bet

A bet on any one number, including 0 or 00, or a combination of numbers.

Labouchere Roulette System

Also called the Split Martingale, Cross-out or Cancellation system. A system by which two numbers are omitted every time a previous bet is won and one number, the sum of two end numbers is then added whenever a previous bet is lost.

Manque

Having failed--especially because of circumstances or a defect in character; unsuccessful; frustrated.

Martingale System

An old roulette system in which a player doubles his/her bet after each loss until a win is obtained (or runs out of money).

Mucker

The second dealer at a table responsible for re-stacking the chips and pushing winning bets out to the first dealer who gives them to the players. If there is no mucker at a table, these responsibilities are given to the first dealer.

Non-Value Chips

Chips that have a money value but are worthless at gaming tables other than the initial table they are being used at.

Outside Bets

Bets referring to particular colours (red or black) or sections (odd, even high or low) and made on numbers outside the actual numbers of a roulette table.

Parlay Roulette System

A system where the player makes a bet and leaves the winnings on the table to be wagered on the next bet.

Primary Dealer

Also known as the first dealer. Person who receives bets, spins the ball, announces the number and handles pay-outs.

Red‑Black Bet

A bet on eighteen numbers that pays a return of 1 to 1.

Six‑Number Bet

An inside combination bet on six numbers simultaneously.

Split Bet

An inside combination bet on two numbers simultaneously.

Straight bet

A single bet on one number or a combination bet.

Straight Up Bet

A wager of just one number (0, 00, 1-36) that pays 35 to 1.

Trio Bet

An inside combination bet on three numbers concurrently.

Two-on-one-Bets

Two wagers placed on a table that result in a 2 to 1 payoff.

Zero

Also known as double-zero. Green in colour and is bet in the same manner as the numbers 1-36
